Tighter Oversight! China Ramps Up Spot Checks on High-Risk Car Models

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued a new directive to intensify quality supervision in 2025, with increased random inspections on vehicle models that attract high public attention or show significant safety risks. Companies found non-compliant will face strict penalties.

The move comes amid the rapid growth of China’s new energy vehicle market, where concerns over battery safety, range inflation, and unreliable driver-assist systems have triggered widespread discussion. While many models meet national standards, real-world performance often reveals deeper risks, exposing a gap between regulations and practical safety.

Defining high-risk models remains challenging. Regulators are encouraged to build a multi-dimensional evaluation system combining media monitoring, consumer complaints, AI-powered public sentiment analysis, and third-party product audits. The development of an industry-wide, data-driven vehicle quality index is crucial for fair and efficient enforcement.

As oversight tightens, automakers will be pushed to prioritize product quality and long-term brand trust. For Chinese carmakers aiming to expand globally, a credible quality assurance system could become a powerful competitive advantage.
