Belgium’s Auto Market Reshaped as New Energy Vehicles Surpass 50% Share

According to the 2025 Belgium Automotive Market Analysis, jointly released in July by FEBIAC and TRAXIO, new energy vehicles accounted for over 53% of new car registrations in the first half of 2025. Battery electric vehicles surged to 32.8%, consolidating their role as the main growth driver.

The report highlights that Belgium’s new car market contracted in H1 2025, with registrations down 10.9% year-on-year to 234,616 units. Shifts in the economic environment, regulatory landscape, and consumer sentiment contributed to the decline. Private buyers increased their share to 45.4%, underlining the growing weight of individual consumption in the market.

In terms of powertrain mix, gasoline cars held steady at 42.7% thanks to cost and convenience advantages. Hybrids rose to 11.7%, catering to buyers seeking balance between efficiency and range, while plug-in hybrids fell to 8.5%, reflecting waning competitiveness.

On the brand and model front, BMW’s X1 retained its top-selling position, Audi’s Q6 and Q4 strengthened their presence in the premium SUV segment, Dacia’s Sandero remained popular among budget-conscious buyers, and Tesla’s Model Y continued to perform strongly in the BEV segment.

Meanwhile, the used car market showed mild growth, with registrations up 0.9% year-on-year to 373,810 units, offering stability against the backdrop of declining new car sales.

Overall, Belgium’s auto market in H1 2025 was characterized by shrinking new car sales, rising private consumption, and rapid NEV adoption—particularly BEVs—pointing to an increasingly electrified and diversified market landscape.
