Renault and Chery in Talks to Redefine EU-China Automotive Landscape

As the global automotive industry undergoes unprecedented transformations, traditional automotive giants are embracing unprecedented levels of collaboration to tackle the enormous investments required for electrification and digitalization, as well as the unbalanced competition in global markets. Following its strategic partnership with Geely, Renault is now negotiating with China’s automotive giant, Chery, to explore deeper cooperation for joint production and sales of vehicles.

The collaboration between Renault and Chery primarily addresses the pressing need for cost sharing and resource integration. Faced with significant research and development pressures, especially in the areas of electrification and intelligent systems, Renault aims to reduce production costs and share R&D burdens through partnerships with Geely and Chery. Additionally, Renault’s global manufacturing facilities, particularly in South America, face underutilization of capacity. The partnership with Chery is expected to optimize production capacity by introducing Chery’s models, enhancing the utilization rates of Renault’s factories.

Notably, the partnership’s focus on the South American market presents a pragmatic strategy. In Colombia and Argentina, Renault will leverage Chery’s technological expertise to produce hybrid pickup trucks and other new energy commercial vehicles. This cooperation will strengthen Renault’s market share in South America while offering Chery a “light asset” export model, reducing the risks and costs associated with building their own channels.Should the partnership succeed, the Renault-Chery alliance will not only accelerate the global expansion of Chinese automakers but also reshape the competitive landscape in emerging markets like South America, setting a new direction for global automotive cooperation.
