As new energy vehicles (NEVs) become more popular in the global market, many consumers who enjoy the convenience of green transportation are facing high after-sales repair costs. In 2022, a Polestar 2 owner experienced a shocking repair bill: the battery replacement cost after an accident was quoted at 540,000 RMB, a price that far exceeded the vehicle’s official guide price, leaving the consumer feeling that “repairing is more expensive than buying.” This “high repair cost” phenomenon is not rare, as more and more car owners find that even minor faults often lead to unexpectedly high repair fees.
When NEVs first became popular, many consumers were drawn to them because of their lower operational costs. However, when repairs are needed, the cost savings that initially seemed so promising are quickly overshadowed by the “high repair bills.” The cost of repairing core components like the battery pack often reaches half the price of the vehicle itself. For example, replacing the battery pack has become an unbearable burden for many owners, leading them to face the dilemma of being able to afford the car but not the repairs.
One of the reasons for the high repair costs is the widespread “replace, not repair” policy adopted by authorized service centers. This policy has driven repair prices sky-high. Even for simple faults, owners are often unable to choose repairs and must instead replace entire components. At the same time, third-party repair shops are hindered by technical and legal obstacles, preventing them from offering viable alternatives and forcing car owners into a difficult repair decision.
Although the NEV aftermarket is vast, with the market size expected to reach 300 billion RMB by 2025, the industry is still in its early stages. Repair shops face dual challenges of technical and legal barriers. To break this deadlock, the industry is actively exploring solutions. Battery manufacturers and third-party platforms are beginning to enter the aftermarket with authorized cooperation and technical support. However, to truly solve the “high repair costs” issue, automakers must open up repair permissions and break the aftermarket monopoly.
Nevertheless, there are positive changes emerging within the industry. Battery manufacturers such as CATL have introduced CTP repair services, significantly lowering the cost of battery replacement and providing consumers with a more affordable option. Additionally, more third-party platforms are forming strategic partnerships with automakers and battery companies to provide technical support and original parts through authorized repair models. With the introduction of more innovative solutions, the NEV aftermarket is expected to evolve into a more fair and transparent market, allowing car owners to enjoy more convenient and affordable repair services.
