According to Fleetnews, global electric vehicle (EV) sales reached a record 2.1 million units in September 2025 — the highest monthly volume ever recorded. Year-to-date global EV registrations totaled 14.7 million units, up 26% compared to the same period last year.
China remained the undisputed leader, contributing around 9 million registrations in the first nine months of 2025, a 24% year-on-year increase. Europe followed closely with approximately 3 million units, marking a 32% annual growth and solidifying its role as a key driver of global expansion.
In the UK, strong seasonal demand linked to new registration plates and the July EV subsidy scheme drove record sales in September. Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that over half of all new cars registered were electrified, with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) soaring 56.4% and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for a record 23.3% of total sales.
Elsewhere in Europe, policy incentives continued to stimulate growth. Germany’s newly approved €3 billion subsidy package aims to boost demand from 2026 onwards, while Italy and Spain reported EV sales growth of two-thirds and more than double year-on-year, respectively.
In the United States, September marked the second consecutive month of record EV sales, rising 66% year-on-year as consumers rushed to benefit from federal tax credits before their expiration. Following the end of the 30D and 45W tax incentives, several automakers — including General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Nissan — have adjusted production plans accordingly.
Amid this global surge, China’s EV market continued to dominate. The country recorded 1.3 million EV sales in September alone, with pure electric models (BEVs) growing 28% to over 800,000 units. Total EV sales for the first three quarters reached nearly 9 million, up 24% year-on-year, underscoring China’s position as the world’s largest and most mature EV market.
