UK Market Slows in August as EVs Hit New High and Chinese Brands Gain Momentum
According to Zhineng Auto data, in August 2025, UK new car registrations totaled 82,908 units, down 2% year-on-year and the lowest August since 2022. Still, year-to-date sales reached 1,265,281 units, up 2.1%, showing resilience despite economic headwinds.
Powertrain data underscores the pace of electrification. Petrol sales fell 14.2% to 37,373 units, taking a 45.1% share, while diesel dropped to just 5.2%. Hybrid registrations also declined nearly 14% to 11.4% share. In sharp contrast, plug-in hybrid sales surged 69.4% to 9,803 units (11.8% share), and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) rose 14.9% to 21,969 units, reaching 26.5% of the market—a new high for 2025. Year-to-date, BEVs now account for 21.9% of UK sales, up from 17.2% last year, underlining the acceleration of the transition.
Volkswagen (7,866 units), Ford (5,617) and BMW (5,200) retained the top three brand spots, but pressure on traditional players is evident. Audi dropped over 20%, Toyota fell 21.9%, while newer entrants posted rapid growth. BYD rose 301.6% to 1,759 units; Omoda climbed more than twentyfold to 1,085 units.
The standout performance came from Jaecoo7, a compact SUV that sold 1,367 units in August, entering the UK monthly top 10 models for the first time at sixth place—an unprecedented result for a Chinese brand. MG’s HS also secured a spot in the top 10 with 1,138 units.
Overall, while the UK market softened, the momentum of electrification and the rise of new challengers signal structural change. Chinese automakers, once peripheral players, are increasingly shaping mainstream competition in mature markets like the UK.
